A little history lesson for you on sunglasses, they date back to ancient Rome and China. It is believed that Roman Emperor Nero was fond of watching gladiator flights through polished gems. While these glasses did help with the glare, yet they did not serve the purpose of saving his eyes from the evil UV rays! Then in 1929 James Foster brought sunglasses to the United States, which were made specifically to product you from the sun. Sunglasses became polarized in 1936, and the aviator shape made sunglasses a fashion statement during WWII.
Oh look, these celebs aren’t holding back with their favorite shades!
Who could forget Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) in those Ray Ban aviators in Top Gun. This film was everything from aerial shots to dogfights. But what a number of us also remember is Tom Cruise within the Pilots jump suit, his motorbike and his Aviator sunglasses. Oh boy did he look good! When Top Gun released in 1986 Ray Ban aviators jumped sales by 40%!
The original model of the aviators was a plastic frame, later replaces with a gold-colored metal one and a antiglare lens in a distinctive green color. These lens are full of characteristics and oversized with a side tear drop shape. Because the lenses came low over the cheeks to protect the entire eye socket, they were said to leave pilots with a Ray-Ban tan.
Aviators still are one of the top selling styles among sunglasses and are not just for celebs but for everyday modern people as well.
I could not leave out these fantastic photos of the good, bad and ugly for sunglasses over the ages!
