In 1937 John Vincent Atanasoff was like many other researchers in the United States, the assistant professor at Iowa State University was knee deep in work, desperately searching for a computation device that was faster than the one he was using. In the mid-1930s the only company tool academics and researchers had to use to do high-order math were manual calculators, specifically the promotional calculators created by the Monroe Company for business use. Later the United States Army would commission its own computer but ABC was first.
