In 1938, when America was teetering on the brink of war, Walter Morrison and his girlfriend were easing some tension by throwing around a flat disc on the beach in Santa Monica, California. While Walter tossed the disc – there’s considerable dispute over whether the disc was a cake pan or the lid from a popcorn container - a group of young whippersnappers came up to him and his girlfriend Lu and asked if they could buy the disc from them for twenty-five cents. Walter immediately smiled. He’d only paid five cents for the disc. The mental cash register went off and a new company was born. After a brief hiatus in World War II, when Walter flew air fighters, P-47s, and ended up being a prisoner of war, the inventor came home to America and fashioned the first flying disc. Calling it the Pluto Platter, Walter hocked his flying disc invention at trade shows and county fairs.

Eventually, Walter sold his design to a toy company who inexplicable changed the name of the flying disc to Frisbee. And the rest is history.
